The Department of Biology offers a 5-year combined BS/MS program tailored for research-focused students pursuing careers in biological sciences. During their senior year plus an additional graduate year, participants complete advanced coursework, undertake independent research, and compose a Master of Science thesis.
To begin, students must collaborate with a faculty member to identify an appropriate research project. Prospective candidates are encouraged to consult multiple faculty members about potential projects before finalizing their research focus. The Biology BS/MS Program Director can help students connect with suitable faculty mentors within the Biology department. Undergraduate participants must allocate sufficient time for research (BIL 495, BIL 496, BIL 497) during at least two semesters, equivalent to a 2-credit lab commitment (6 weekly hours), though dedicated students often invest more time. Applications undergo review at the junior year's conclusion, making it advisable to initiate research during sophomore year.
