The Geography department confers M.A. degrees at the graduate level, while Earth Sciences offers both M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Those pursuing geophysics graduate studies should reach out to CERI for details. Our graduate curriculum fosters student development through rigorous academics, research initiatives, and career-building experiences. Scholars can explore traditional disciplinary focuses or interdisciplinary approaches in their graduate research.
Key program goals include: (1) developing proficiency in addressing complex Earth Science challenges through field and lab work; (2) achieving specialized expertise in Earth Science principles and their practical applications; and (3) equipping graduates for professional careers or doctoral studies in Earth Sciences and related disciplines. Welcome to our Earth Sciences Department. Established in 2002 within the University of Memphis's College of Arts and Sciences, our department boasts 14 dedicated faculty members spanning Archaeology, Geography, and Geology. We prioritize personalized excellence through collaborative, cross-disciplinary Earth Science education and investigation. Both professors and students enjoy the freedom to explore unconventional educational and research pathways that might be constrained in conventional academic settings. The department maintains strong partnerships with campus entities including CERI, CAESER, Chucalissa Museum, and CIUM. Our Archaeology faculty actively collaborate with other archaeology-focused programs throughout the university.
