The CEPH-accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) program aims to cultivate an engaging learning atmosphere within an urban context, fostering educational excellence, groundbreaking research, and community service to improve health outcomes for Mid-South residents. The program goals include: (1) Developing tomorrow's public health leaders through top-tier education and hands-on training in core public health principles, methodologies, and applications; (2) Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with focused attention on underserved groups facing greater health disparities; (3) Conducting cutting-edge research to address pressing public health problems, prevent illnesses and injuries, and enhance physical and psychological wellness; (4) Partnering with local communities to tackle regional health issues through cooperative efforts; and (5) Influencing health policies, sharing vital health data, and raising public health awareness via disease monitoring, community assessments, and program analyses.

Qualification Requirements

Admission to the Graduate School is open to anyone holding a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university. In cases, where a program’s accrediting body allows alternate admissions standards, exceptions may be made. Applicants should have completed undergraduate or graduate work of sufficient quality and scope to enable them to successfully pursue graduate study. Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor’s degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents. GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field. English proficiency test scores required by the University: Duolingo English Test- For students affected by test center closures due to COVID-19, the University is temporarily accepting Duolingo as an alternative. 100 or higher on the overall score, all sub scores must be at least 80. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Institution code 1459. TOEFL - 550 or higher on the paper version, 79 or higher on the internet-based test IELTS (International English Language Testing System- 6.0 or higher PTE (Pearson Test of English) - 53 or higher A multi-disciplinary faculty admissions committee determines admission to the MPH program. Criteria for the selection process are broad because of the wide range of backgrounds from which students may apply. Prior background in public health or health care is not necessary for admission but may be considered in the admission process. The following is necessary for application: Applicants must hold a bachelor or graduate degree from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.00 scale) or a graduate cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher in the major subject area. Current Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores from within the past five years are required. Applicants already holding a doctoral degree or its professional equivalent obtained in the United States may be exempt from the GRE requirement. Professional school standardized test scores (e.g. MCAT, DAT, LSAT, etc.) may be substituted for the GRE by applicants who are enrolled in or who have already earned post-baccalaureate degrees in areas such as medicine, dentistry, or law. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit acceptable scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Letters of recommendation from at least three persons familiar with the applicant’s academic background or experience in public health related issues, specifying in detail the applicant’s capabilities for graduate study and for future performance as a public health professional, are required. At least one letter from a former professor or instructor is required. Applicants must also submit a statement of purpose in approximately 400-500 words indicating his or her present interests and career goals, including why s/he wants to pursue an MPH degree.
