The University of Memphis' Department of Theatre & Dance focuses on personalized student growth. Our Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre includes specializations in acting, musical theater, dance, dance science, and production design, while our Master of Fine Arts program offers concentrations in directing and production design. We customize our curriculum to fit each student's aspirations. With substantial resources, we provide vibrant performance, design, and technical experiences across our four performance venues and classroom settings.

At the same time, we maintain a close-knit environment for focused mentorship. Our experienced faculty supports every student's journey, whether they're an emerging costume designer, musical theater artist, or production manager. Our program blends broad exploration of theater disciplines with focused specialization.
For MFA candidates, our department aims to equip students with the knowledge, experience, and techniques to achieve professional excellence. Mastering theatrical arts demands an educational setting that combines theoretical understanding with hands-on practice. The University of Memphis offers this through committed instructors, numerous production opportunities, and extensive resources for artistic development. Coursework includes Theatrical Collaboration and Style, Dramatic Theory and Criticism, and Dramatic Literature Analysis. The three-year program follows a structured progression: students undertake skill-building projects to enhance their abilities and address growth areas. Key components include the Internship and Practicum, along with additional projects approved by the graduate committee. Annual portfolio reviews ensure students meet program standards, culminating in a comprehensive examination as the final requirement.
