The University of Memphis Sociology Department provides graduate education culminating in a Master of Arts degree in Sociology. All students must complete foundational training in sociological theory, research methodologies, and statistical analysis. The curriculum encompasses diverse specializations including race, class, and gender studies; global development; social transformation; population studies; family dynamics; social deviance; and health sociology.
This Master's program enables students to cultivate expertise in specific sociological fields while establishing strong theoretical and methodological foundations. Students benefit from close faculty mentorship and hands-on research experience. Graduates gain comprehensive sociological knowledge that prepares them for doctoral programs or careers in applied research settings.
Students can choose between two degree paths: a thesis track (24 course credits plus 6 thesis credits) or a non-thesis option (33 course credits with comprehensive written and oral exams covering sociological theory, research methods, statistics, and a student-selected specialization).
Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor’s degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents.
GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field.
