The University of Memphis History Department excels in African-American and Southern history studies. Though these are separate academic disciplines where students may focus on just one, our program offers a distinctive chance to explore how these two historical narratives have continuously influenced each other through the ages in countless significant and subtle ways. While our primary focus spans the 19th and 20th century United States, our faculty's diverse expertise crosses national boundaries, geographic regions, and historical periods, allowing students to conduct research that's simultaneously global in scope and deeply rooted in African-American and/or Southern contexts. With strong departmental offerings in labor history, racial studies, gender studies, political history, women's history, and economic history, students discover numerous avenues for specialized research. Therefore, while Southern and African-American histories form the core of our academic work, students have plentiful opportunities to carve out their own scholarly niche within and between these two vibrant, interconnected fields with their own complex historical relationships.
