The MA in Economics program equips students with practical expertise in business analytics, data management, analytical methods, cost-benefit evaluation, and problem-solving abilities. In today's data-driven world, these competencies prove essential not only for economist or analyst roles but also for management positions. Consequently, the MA in Economics degree has grown significantly in both demand and prestige.
At the University of Memphis, our MA in Economics features two specialized pathways - an applied track and an academic track - tailored to individual student goals. Regardless of your chosen path, our graduates consistently secure positions in elite PhD programs and leading global corporations. The program aims to: (1) establish a robust understanding of economic theory and analysis; (2) develop specialized knowledge in either applied or academic economics; (3) master quantitative techniques for solving research challenges and making professional impacts as economists or business specialists; and (4) prepare graduates to successfully pursue careers across private and public sector organizations.
Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor’s degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents.
GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field.
