The Ph.D. in Computer Science provides students with an advanced, research-focused education. The Computer Science Department at the University of Memphis was formally launched in Spring 2005, fulfilling a longstanding vision that "A top-tier university must have an outstanding computer science department in the modern era." The foundation was laid much earlier within the Mathematical Sciences Department in 1971, when assistant professor Jim Jamison initiated numerical analysis courses. These early efforts culminated in a Bachelor of Science program in computer science in 1982 under Stan Franklin's leadership, followed by strategic faculty recruitment starting in 1984 during Ralph Faudree's chairmanship. A graduate computer science track was soon added to the M.S. program, and by 1999, a dedicated division with five faculty members emerged under Max Garzon's direction. The unit expanded to 12 faculty by 2002 before achieving full departmental status with TBR approval in 2005.
