The German Studies program at the University of Memphis aims to develop students' language skills and cultural understanding of German-speaking regions.
Our German faculty includes experts across various disciplines who combine language instruction with studies of literature, linguistics, film, cultural studies, and modern German society, business, and politics. The Department of World Languages and Literatures provides courses in multiple languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. With thirty dedicated faculty members, the department focuses on research, teaching, and community engagement.
Students can pursue a bachelor's degree in World Languages with specializations in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish, while also having options for Arabic, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, and Russian studies. At the graduate level, we offer a Master of Arts in Romance Languages with concentrations in French or Spanish, covering literature, linguistics, civilization, and specialized language applications.
Language study plays a vital role in the University's global mission by fostering cultural appreciation. In today's interconnected world, where international trade, tourism, and collaborations are expanding, understanding foreign cultures and civilizations has become essential for well-rounded, educated individuals.
