The Bachelor in Liberal Arts (BLA) program at UMass Lowell takes an interdisciplinary approach to education, preparing students to explore multifaceted issues related to the environment, poverty, governance, peace and conflict, education, and other pressing topics.

Students choose two focus areas (from humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields) and complete at least six courses in each concentration. Potential concentrations range from theatre arts to legal studies and economics (refer to the Approved Concentrations section for full details).

Additionally, students fulfill the Interdisciplinary Focus requirement, which integrates their learning. Typically, students enroll in Foundations in Liberal Studies during their second year and Capstone in Liberal Studies in their final year.

The Art History concentration within the BLA program offers an in-depth exploration of historical eras, cultural expressions, aesthetic evaluations, and artistic decisions reflected in architecture, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and artifacts across different time periods. Through studying the intellectual and scientific influences on art and civilization, students gain the ability to critically evaluate artistic works from diverse cultures. This concentration helps students refine their aesthetic perception, analytical thinking, critical assessment, as well as written and oral communication skills.
