The Master of Fine Arts in Visual Design with a Photography focus is a 60-credit program spanning 2-3 years. Our curriculum operates on the principle that photography uniquely bridges emerging technologies, cultural heritage, and artistic creation. By situating this degree within a Design framework, MFA Photography students benefit from exposure to diverse faculty expertise in cutting-edge technologies and design principles, equipping them with career-ready skills. Each MFA student creates an original thesis project supported by comprehensive research, requiring both visual and written elements that meet high intellectual, formal, and technical standards. Students assemble advisory committees tailored to their thesis focus, selecting from faculty offering varied perspectives and specialized knowledge. Beyond utilizing the main campus's photographic resources—including a cutting-edge media lab with Epson color printers, traditional darkrooms, and professional studios—graduate students receive dedicated studio space at our Star Store campus in New Bedford. This urban arts hub brings together all graduate disciplines, cultivating a collaborative environment ideal for cross-disciplinary projects.
