As a history student, you'll have the opportunity to explore diverse historical periods and regions, including the United States, Europe, Russia, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. You'll develop a comprehensive grasp of historical themes and research methodologies while specializing in subjects that align with your interests. Our faculty's expertise spans numerous areas, from maritime history and Middle Eastern studies to military history, racial dynamics, and terrorism. The critical thinking and communication abilities honed through historical study open doors to careers in government, education, diplomacy, media, legal professions, cultural institutions, political engagement, policy development, and communications. A history degree also provides excellent preparation for graduate studies across multiple disciplines and serves as strong pre-law preparation. At UMassD, aspiring middle or high school history teachers can complete educator certification, taking advanced courses in their senior year to prepare for MTEL exams and immediate teaching careers after graduation.
