Become a dedicated professional delivering psychological and educational support to children, teens, and families within school environments.
UMass Boston's School Psychology Program equips professionals passionate about youth development, family dynamics, and educational systems. Our training principles are rooted in valuing every individual's worth while embracing and addressing diverse backgrounds. The curriculum blends developmental theory with practical research, focusing on scientifically validated intervention methods for school-based psychological services. A core objective of our program is cultivating the mindset needed for professional decision-making and continuous growth. We uphold social justice and inclusion values, aligning with the College of Education and Human Development's mission at UMass Boston.
Our School Psychology Program's central aim is to train practitioners who deliver comprehensive psychological and educational support to young people and families through school-based interdisciplinary teams. School psychologists fulfill multifaceted roles, serving as evaluators, advisors, counselors, administrators, researchers, program developers, staff trainers, mental health advocates, and community liaisons. Using a competency-driven, problem-solving framework, our program prepares students to excel in these diverse responsibilities. We emphasize a comprehensive perspective that accounts for biological, neuropsychological, personal, familial, educational, and sociocultural influences. Students develop skills to assess and intervene at both individual and systemic levels (including families, schools, and communities) to promote healthy youth development. The program encourages teamwork across disciplines and synthesizes varied professional viewpoints.
