PhD candidates in the Organic Chemistry program must complete one foundational course, two specialized organic chemistry courses, three electives, a minimum of six graduate seminar credits, and twenty dissertation research credits. Among the electives, one must be from the Chemistry Department, with the option to take up to two from other departments pending approval from the dissertation committee.
The Chemistry Department at UMass Boston provides an extensive PhD program focused on developing innovative and ethical researchers. Students can pursue six specialized doctoral pathways: Biological Chemistry, Chemistry Education Research, Green Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical/Analytical Chemistry, all emphasizing cross-disciplinary collaboration. The program encourages early research lab involvement and personalized study plans aligned with each student's academic focus.
The degree requires 60 credits, including two core courses, three electives, a graduate seminar, and dissertation research. Core course selection depends on the student's chosen specialization. Notably, Green Chemistry principles are integrated throughout all doctoral curricula. The program concludes with a public research defense and dissertation publication.
