The Chemistry Department at UMass Boston provides an extensive PhD program focused on developing innovative and ethical researchers. Doctoral candidates can specialize in six distinct areas: Biological Chemistry, Chemistry Education Research, Green Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical/Analytical Chemistry, with strong interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities. The program encourages early involvement in laboratory research, allowing students to customize their studies based on their academic focus.
To graduate, students must fulfill 60 credit hours, including two foundational courses, three electives, a graduate seminar, and dissertation research. The required core curriculum varies by specialization. Notably, Green Chemistry principles are integrated across all doctoral concentrations. The program concludes with a public research defense and dissertation publication.
Those pursuing Biological Chemistry must complete one core course, two track-specific courses, three electives (with at least one from Chemistry), six seminar credits, and twenty dissertation research credits. With committee approval, students may take up to two electives from other departments.
