The Lighting Program is driven by enthusiasm—enthusiasm for light's transformative power and the possibilities of theatrical experiences.

Through the program, you'll receive both technical and artistic instruction in courses enhanced by annual production opportunities. Working on actual productions as a designer or assistant will help you develop your creative vision while mastering collaborative teamwork.

You'll benefit from personalized guidance that balances support with challenge, whether in the studio or performance space. These close mentor-student connections form the foundation of the lighting program—with intentionally small class sizes to foster meaningful individual attention.

Additionally, you'll gain teaching experience with both novice and advanced undergraduates while receiving coaching to refine your instructional abilities.

Upon graduation, you'll join an influential network of UMass alumni working in the industry. You'll graduate equipped with the artistic expertise, technical knowledge, and professional competencies needed for careers in theater or academia.
