The UMass Amherst Theater Department offers an immersive graduate program focused on collaborative learning and practical training. You'll engage with a challenging core curriculum while gaining hands-on experience under the guidance of faculty who are actively working in professional theater. Our production season serves as an educational lab, complemented by small class sizes that foster personalized mentorship and tailored learning paths. The MFA in Theater equips you for careers in professional theater companies, academic institutions, and diverse cultural and artistic fields.

All graduate students enjoy full tuition waivers, health benefits, and assistantships throughout their three-year program.

You'll have chances to develop teaching skills and pursue internships with both local and national organizations. Faculty frequently involve students in shadowing opportunities or professional collaborations.

We prioritize cultural diversity, evident in our faculty composition and curriculum design. Graduate students work with mentors specializing in African-American, African, Latinx, and Spanish-language theater, alongside experts in feminism and gender studies.
