The anthropology graduate program at UMass Amherst aims to cultivate top-tier scholars, teachers, and public thought leaders. Alumni from our program have earned distinguished honors, secured academic roles including post-doctoral and tenure-track positions, and taken influential roles in NGOs. Our adaptable graduate curriculum enables students to design personalized study plans across all subdisciplines. We foster interdisciplinary approaches that bridge traditional academic boundaries. Through close mentorship, students collaborate with advisors to shape their academic path and research focus. The program provides both master's and doctoral degrees, with master's candidates typically completing coursework in 3-4 semesters and PhD candidates undertaking an additional four years of specialized research and training.

Accordingly, new questions and perspectives are constantly being explored and tested. Individuals with quite different backgrounds, experiences, and goals have joined our program and have been successful in their contributions to anthropology as a whole. Thus, we do not have in mind a single profile of our ideal applicant in terms of background in anthropology. Rather, we look for individuals who have received a strong undergraduate education, who express themselves lucidly in writing, who are clear about what they want both from our program and for their careers, and who are self-starters, and capable of high-quality independent work.
There are three principal kinds of information that applicants are required to submit for our faculty to review:

The application form
Two letters of reference
Official transcripts of all post-high school academic work
The Department of Anthropology does not require GREs to apply or for admittance into the graduate program.
