In your initial year as a PhD candidate in comparative literature, you'll concentrate on graduate-level coursework while honing teaching abilities through TA responsibilities. You'll collaborate with a faculty mentor and facilitate discussion sections for professor-led lectures. Doctoral candidates typically enroll in three graduate courses (totaling nine credits) each term, plus either a one-credit TA workshop or language study. Coursework must be finished within the semester it's assigned, with a maximum of one incomplete (INC) grade allowed. First-year scholars have regular meetings with the graduate program director (GPD), who acts as their primary advisor and must approve all course registrations every semester.
