Art students pursuing painting in the Department of Art undergo a comprehensive foundation in the field through courses that examine conventional painting techniques on canvas and paper. They also investigate diverse interdisciplinary methods, with opportunities to incorporate digital and photographic elements, as well as experiment with three-dimensional painting in installation settings. The painting curriculum fosters the expertise and analytical abilities needed to cultivate a unique artistic voice while providing a wide perspective on art's role in history, culture, society, and everyday experiences.
Foundational courses teach core techniques in both oil- and water-based paints. Early classes explore still life, figure, and landscape painting, along with abstract concepts. Regular critiques, slide presentations, and guest artist talks form key elements of the program.
Intermediate classes allow students to explore storytelling techniques and thematic progression using various materials. By studying historical artworks alongside contemporary visual culture (such as graffiti, comics, and fashion), students refine their artistic perspective while enhancing their ability to analyze visual language. The program balances observational painting with imaginative creation at all levels.
Advanced students develop the ability to clearly express their artistic vision, expand thematic concepts, and critically assess their work—both independently and through faculty guidance and peer discussions.
