The UMass Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance is a rigorous professional program designed to equip students for careers in performance and choreography or advanced academic pursuits. Students develop deep theoretical understanding and practical skills through hands-on practice, critical inquiry, and scholarly research, applying dance principles to contemporary challenges in the field.
BFA candidates complete an immersive curriculum featuring 16 technique courses and 14 theory courses, culminating in a senior thesis project. Technique training spans ballet, modern, and jazz, while academic studies cover dance history, choreography, rhythm studies, dance science, and production techniques.
The program offers extensive performance and choreographic opportunities, along with interdisciplinary exploration. Students engage with visiting artists through masterclasses and special events, while three annual productions showcase their work. Additionally, the Five College Dance collaboration expands resources, allowing faculty to coordinate cross-institutional curricula, performances, and services that expose students to diverse artistic approaches.
