At UMass Amherst, an Italian studies major equips students with fluency in Italian while fostering a deep understanding of its literary and cultural heritage within the humanities. You can choose a comprehensive Italian studies track or pair it with disciplines like business, political science, art history, or education. The program covers Italian language mastery alongside explorations of Italy's visual arts, film, architecture, design, economy, geography, history, government systems, political landscape, and philosophical traditions. We strongly recommend participating in our affiliated study abroad opportunities in Siena and Forlì or applying for postgraduate teaching positions in Milan via the Lombardia Internship program. On campus, the Thatcher House residency offers complete Italian language immersion. Graduates emerge ready for bilingual careers in education, diplomacy, global commerce, arts management, museum work, preservation, publishing, interior design, fashion, or the culinary and hospitality sectors.
