Pursuing a degree in History of Art and Architecture provides excellent preparation not just for arts-related careers, but also equips you with valuable skills applicable to any profession dealing with visual culture. The program offers specialized courses covering major periods of Western European art and architecture: from Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations through Medieval, Renaissance, and modern eras spanning the 17th to 21st centuries.
Your studies will explore global artistic traditions, including the Americas, East Asian cultures, Islamic art, and beyond. Through the Five Colleges consortium—Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire—you can expand your studies to include African and South Asian art traditions.
UMass Amherst's New England location provides convenient access to numerous museums, architectural landmarks, and historical sites throughout the Northeast region.
