Comparative literature is an interdisciplinary field that explores literature and other media as forms of human expression across cultures. This comparative approach draws from diverse disciplines like philosophy, history, linguistics, sociology, sciences, and media studies. You'll analyze literary works from various national traditions while exploring connections between literature and other artistic mediums.
At UMass Amherst's comparative literature program, you can tailor your academic journey by selecting from diverse, specialized courses. We prioritize your intellectual development through personalized advising and student-focused resources.
The undergraduate program provides multiple specialization tracks to design your ideal curriculum. Options include intensive language study in two or three languages, or combining literary studies with another discipline (such as history, art, economics, philosophy, film studies, or political science). Unique opportunities include film studies and translation specializations within the major.
Degree requirements include six comparative literature courses plus advanced coursework in at least two other departments, chosen with faculty guidance.
