The Greek and Latin Languages Concentration allows students to explore the diverse and profound literary works of ancient Greece and Rome in their original tongues. Learners can choose among numerous courses covering epic and lyric poetry, theater, historical accounts, biographies, rhetoric, and philosophical texts, encompassing the principal styles and writers of classical literature.
The UMass Classics department boasts a dynamic and expanding undergraduate curriculum. Students pursuing this major have access to an extensive selection of classes: beyond comprehensive instruction in ancient Greek and Latin, we offer multiple Classical Civilization courses in translation, including Greek Mythology, Greek Drama, Ancient Mediterranean Cultures, Ancient Magic Traditions, Heroic Poetry, Ancient Greek Religion, Gender in Antiquity, Etruscan Civilization, and Classical Painting, alongside various Classical Archaeology options. Our robust Classics Honors Program consistently yields exceptional senior theses and projects. Numerous undergraduates also join Eta Sigma Phi, the national classics honor society, where our active chapter balances academic pursuits with social events and community initiatives. Past activities have featured excursions to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, yearly book sales, and university service projects like complimentary Latin and Greek tutoring. The Greek and Latin Languages Concentration enables students to delve into the extraordinarily rich and varied literary heritage of ancient Greece and Rome through original texts. Participants can select from an array of courses examining epic and lyric verse, dramatic works, historical writings, biographies, rhetorical studies, and philosophical treatises, spanning the key forms and figures of classical literature.
