The Classics and Philosophy Concentration is ideal for students who want to read ancient Greek philosophical texts in their original language. This program mandates four years of ancient Greek language study, along with several philosophy courses, such as two introductory Philosophy classes (e.g., PHIL 100, 100H, 110) and two courses on ancient philosophy (e.g., PHIL 320, 328). Students can also pursue ancient Roman philosophy by taking Latin language courses instead of Greek. For those considering this path
UMass Classics boasts a dynamic and expanding undergraduate program. Majors have access to diverse course offerings, including all levels of ancient Greek and Latin, as well as numerous Classical Civilization courses taught in translation. These cover topics like Greek Mythology, Greek Drama, Classical Cultures, Ancient Magic, Epic Poetry, Greek Religion, Women in Antiquity, Etruscan Civilization, and Classical Art. The department also features a robust Classics Honors Program, where students frequently produce exceptional senior theses and projects. Many join Eta Sigma Phi, the national classics honor society, which organizes academic, social, and service initiatives—from museum visits to book sales and free tutoring in Latin and Greek. The Classics & Philosophy Concentration is tailored for students seeking to engage with Greek philosophical works in their original form, requiring four years of Greek language training alongside Philosophy Department courses, including introductory and ancient philosophy classes. The Latin-based Roman philosophy alternative is also available. For details, contact the Department of Classics at 545-0512. NOTE: This is an independent, interdisciplinary major.
