The East Asian Languages & Cultures program provides comprehensive language training combined with cross-disciplinary cultural studies spanning different historical periods, enabling students to develop critical thinking skills and expand their worldview. The program features challenging language classes taught by skilled, committed educators. By their senior year, undergraduate majors should achieve fluency in Chinese communication with appropriate social awareness.
Students can choose from diverse course offerings that explore subjects including literature, linguistics, history, cinema, religious studies, gender studies, performing arts, international relations, and LGBTQ+ studies. These classes equip students with critical analysis and writing skills, the ability to articulate insights about Asia clearly, and practical applications for their future careers.
Upon graduating with a Chinese major, you'll gain confidence in Chinese communication with cultural sensitivity. At UMass Amherst, our intensive language curriculum is delivered by passionate, expert instructors.
