Our musical theater program takes pride in fostering a close community of diverse students and faculty, all passionate about nurturing each participant's artistic abilities. We provide comprehensive training in singing, dancing, and acting - the essential skills for excelling in performing arts. This program serves as an ideal springboard for launching your career in the entertainment industry.
You'll have opportunities to work with our professional on-campus theater company, along with various performance groups including chamber ensembles, concert bands, jazz groups, choirs, orchestras, opera productions, musical theater performances, and our spirited marching band.

Qualification Requirements

2.7 (on a grading scale with 4.0=A, approximately a B- average) on the last two years of Bachelor's coursework, 3.0 on all previous graduate work (approximately a B average). An applicant was awarded a Master's degree at an accredited college/university in the United States and has been in residence in the United States continuously prior to application to SIU (not out of the country for more than one calendar year). You have a minimum of 60 graded (A, B, C) hours of recent coursework completed at an accredited college / university in the United States with continuous residence in the United States prior to application at SIU. Pass / Fail, Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory, or Proficiency credit is not acceptable. The English language requirement may be met by submitting: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS
Each path of advanced music studies is as unique as the individual artist. To be considered for acceptance into the Master of Music program at SIU you must complete the applications required by both the university and the School of Music. As a prospective student you must also schedule an audition, after making contact with an academic advisor, to determine the appropriate way to proceed based on your degree and musical background.
Letters of Recommendation

For non-vocalists: Two (2) letters of recommendation are required from past teachers and/or music professionals who know your work and can assess your potential for scholarly and creative work at the graduate level.
For vocalists. Two (2) letters are required. One (1) from your current voice teacher and one(1) from an ensemble/stage director.
