The University of Maryland's African-American Studies program delivers an exceptional interdisciplinary curriculum exploring the Black experience across the United States, Africa, and the African Diaspora. Our distinguished faculty, recognized nationally and globally, investigate critical topics including gender and labor relations, health disparities, educational policy gaps, criminal justice impacts, and family health dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa. Rooted in both social sciences and humanities, our program provides distinctive perspectives on historical and modern challenges affecting African-descended communities while informing impactful social policies. This certificate program perfectly complements students' primary majors across various departments and colleges. Many participants fulfill General Education requirements, electives, or supplementary coursework in other fields through AASP classes while pursuing the certificate. The program structure comprises three components: foundational courses, advanced AASP electives, and a culminating seminar. Students must complete all certificate requirements with standard letter grades, achieving a minimum grade of C- in each course.
