The Department of Environmental Science and Technology (ENST) provides advanced degree programs culminating in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy qualifications. ENST candidates can specialize in one of four focus areas: Soil and Watershed Sciences, Ecological Technology Design, Wetland Science, or Ecosystem Health and Natural Resource Management. The Soil and Watershed Sciences track equips students to tackle complex environmental challenges related to soil systems across various scales, from individual fields to entire watersheds. As Earth's most intricate biogeochemical systems, soils play a vital role in all terrestrial environments - ranging from grasslands and Arctic tundra to urban landscapes, forest ecosystems, and agricultural lands dedicated to biofuel production. Soil Science forms the core of Critical Zone research, which examines the dynamic interface where Earth's atmosphere, rocky crust, water systems, and living organisms interact.
