The Department of Entomology provides doctoral (Ph.D.) and master's (M.S.) degree programs. Students can pursue research across fundamental and practical areas such as insect ecology, behavior, physiology, anatomy, evolutionary studies, biosystematics, insect diseases, molecular biology, genetics, aquatic insect studies, pollinator science, beekeeping, and pest control strategies. Graduates find career paths in corporate sectors, academic institutions, extension services, government agencies at all levels, private organizations, non-profits, and global or domestic opportunities. The University of Maryland's Entomology Graduate Program tailors its approach to each student's unique goals, featuring minimal mandatory coursework and allowing programs to be shaped collaboratively by students, advisors, and thesis committees.
Students applying for graduate work in entomology are expected to have a strong background in the biological or agricultural sciences, chemistry, genetics, and mathematics. An undergraduate degree in entomology is not required, but a strong basic preparation is preferred for admission to the program.
