The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Technology caters to meteorologists, oceanographers, and environmental scientists seeking advanced expertise in atmospheric and oceanic sciences, computational techniques, and air quality studies. This program requires completion of ten 3-credit courses. Tailored for working professionals, it offers flexible scheduling options—students can pursue it part-time within five years or full-time in just one year and a semester.
The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science provides graduate programs leading to MPS, MS, and PhD degrees. It also delivers upper-division and graduate-level coursework to support other university programs. The curriculum spans a wide range of mathematical, physical, and applied sciences essential to modern atmospheric sciences and physical oceanography, encompassing climate studies, earth system science, and interdisciplinary research on atmosphere-ocean-land-biota interactions. These advanced degree programs equip students for cutting-edge research in atmospheric and oceanic sciences, with specialization areas including: atmospheric dynamics, chemistry, physical oceanography, air pollution, radiative transfer, remote sensing, climate studies, data assimilation, weather prediction, severe storms, surface-atmosphere interactions, and earth system modeling. Core courses establish foundational knowledge in atmospheric/oceanic dynamics, physical meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, and climate science, while specialized courses and hands-on research with modern facilities prepare graduates for impactful careers in their chosen specialties.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
