The Student Affairs Concentration focuses on training future professionals for roles in higher education settings. Guided by principles of student growth, diversity and inclusion, leadership, academic inquiry, and ethical standards, this program collaborates closely with the University of Maryland, College Park's Division of Student Affairs. Master's degree holders typically find employment in areas like student engagement programs, academic counseling, career guidance, housing services, orientation initiatives, leadership development, and cultural centers. Those earning doctoral degrees frequently pursue faculty positions or high-level administrative roles overseeing academic support services, student programming, campus life offices, diversity centers, institutional research, academic assistance programs, and career development departments. The program's proximity to Washington DC offers students access to numerous higher education institutions, policy groups, and professional associations in the region.
This concentration forms part of the broader Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education (HESI) graduate program, which also includes specializations in Higher Education and International Education Policy. Applicants should carefully review all concentration options and select the one that best aligns with their professional goals and interests, noting that only one specialization can be chosen per application.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
