The University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore (UMB) permits JD students to transfer a maximum of 9 credits from the MCP program, while the Urban Studies and Planning Program allows up to 9 credits from JD coursework to count toward the MCP degree. This arrangement enables dual-degree students to reduce their total credit load by as many as 18 credits. Prospective students must gain admission to both programs independently. Transferred credits must carry a grade of B or higher. Credit transfers between programs are only permitted while simultaneously enrolled in both - completed degrees do not qualify for this benefit. This combined Community Planning and Law program lets students work toward a Master of Community Planning at University of Maryland, College Park alongside a JD from the University of Maryland Carey School of Law in Baltimore. The dual-degree path accelerates completion compared to pursuing each degree sequentially, as illustrated below. The MCP currently demands 48 credits, while the JD requires 85, totaling 133 credits if pursued separately. Through the dual program, this requirement drops to 115 credits.
