The Student Affairs Concentration focuses on training future professionals for roles in higher education settings. This program is built upon foundational principles including student growth, diversity and equity, leadership development, academic inquiry, and ethical standards. We collaborate closely with the University of Maryland, College Park's Division of Student Affairs, which has a longstanding tradition of fostering scholar-practitioners. Master's degree holders typically find employment in areas like student engagement programs, academic counseling departments, career guidance services, residence life offices, orientation initiatives, leadership development programs, and cultural centers. Those earning doctoral degrees frequently pursue careers as faculty members or high-level administrators, overseeing departments such as academic support services, student engagement programs, student life offices, cultural centers, evaluation and research units, academic assistance programs, and career development centers. Our proximity to Washington DC offers students numerous possibilities to engage with diverse higher education institutions, policy groups, and professional associations in the region.
Student Affairs represents one specialization option within The Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education (HESI) graduate program. Alongside Student Affairs, HESI provides specializations in Higher Education and International Education Policy. Applicants should select and indicate only one specialization on their application. Prospective students are encouraged to thoroughly research each concentration to determine which best aligns with their individual goals and professional objectives.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
