The Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology is administered through the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences. This graduate program welcomes applicants who have finished their bachelor's degree and completed foundational coursework in communication sciences and disorders. The SPLA curriculum combines rigorous academics with clinical training, specifically preparing students for careers as Speech-Language Pathologists. While the program emphasizes communication disorders, it also covers typical communication processes and research methodologies as essential components. Graduates qualify for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) and can obtain licensure in Maryland and other states. The standard completion time is two years (five semesters, including summer and winter terms). Students may choose to specialize in Cultural and Linguistic Diversity or enroll simultaneously in the post-baccalaureate Bilingual Certificate Program for Speech-Language Pathology.
Admission to the M.A. program is on a very competitive basis. Each year, the Department receives approximately 250-300 applications for 25 anticipated spaces in the M.A. program in Speech-Language Pathology. Successful M.A. applicants typically have earned at least a 3.5 undergraduate GPA (with 3.7-3.8 being the average), and have strong GRE scores and letters of recommendation and a Resume. In addition to the Graduate School requirements, the Department requires applicants to furnish scores on the Graduate Record Examination.
