The Philosophy Department provides graduate programs culminating in either a Master of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy degree, focusing on modern Anglo-American philosophical thought and its intersections with other academic fields. While many doctoral candidates begin without an M.A., they can obtain one while progressing toward their Ph.D. The Ph.D. track primarily prepares students for academic careers in higher education, whereas the M.A. program serves those seeking to enhance their undergraduate knowledge or apply philosophical expertise to other professional domains.
The study of philosophy of mind now frequently involves interdisciplinary collaboration, an approach embraced by all department faculty specializing in this field. Their research explores diverse subjects such as consciousness (both unified and fragmented), mental representation, psychological theories, self-awareness, self-regulation, and related topics. Department members actively contribute to the University of Maryland Cognitive Science Colloquium, with several participating in the interdisciplinary Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS) program.
