The Department of History provides graduate programs awarding Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, through collaborations with the College of Information Studies, students can pursue a combined Master of Arts in History and Library Science. A partnership with the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation enables another dual-degree option: a Master of Arts in History and Historic Preservation. The MA and PhD programs feature specialized tracks including Ancient Mediterranean, Medieval, Early Modern Europe, Modern Europe, Global Interaction and Exchange, International, Jewish, Latin America, Middle East, Russia & Eurasia, Technology, Science, & Environment, the United States, and Women & Gender. For MA candidates exclusively, Africa and Military studies are available. With over fifty faculty members and around 150 graduate students, the program particularly shines in African-American, US, and Middle Eastern studies. Other strong areas include Western and Central Europe, Russia and Eurasia, Ancient Mediterranean, Latin American, and Women & Gender studies. Recently, Atlantic history, the African diaspora, and Global Interaction and Exchange have gained momentum, drawing more students and faculty interest.
