The Department of History provides graduate programs awarding Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, through collaboration with the College of Information Studies, students can pursue a combined Master of Arts in History and Library Science. A partnership with the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation enables another dual-degree option: a Master of Arts in History and Historic Preservation. The MA and PhD programs feature specialized tracks including Ancient Mediterranean, Medieval Studies, Early Modern Europe, Modern Europe, Global Interaction and Exchange, International History, Jewish Studies, Latin America, Middle East, Russia & Eurasia, Technology, Science, & Environment, United States History, and Women & Gender Studies. Exclusive MA concentrations cover Africa and Military History. With over fifty faculty members and around 150 graduate students, the program demonstrates particular excellence in African-American, US, and Middle Eastern studies. Additional strong areas include Western/Central European, Russian/Eurasian, Ancient Mediterranean, Latin American, and Women & Gender studies. Emerging fields gaining faculty and student interest include Atlantic history, African diaspora studies, and Global Interaction and Exchange.
Both MA and PhD candidates can specialize in these historical disciplines. Our vibrant academic community comprises esteemed faculty, university-affiliated scholars, visiting researchers, and guest lecturers. The program benefits from exceptional resources at the University of Maryland and throughout the Washington/Baltimore region. Faculty expertise primarily focuses on 19th-20th century developments, especially in US and European contexts, while supporting broader geographical and temporal research interests where course availability permits.
