The Department of History provides graduate programs awarding Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, through collaborations with the College of Information Studies, students can pursue a combined Master of Arts in History and Library Science. A partnership with the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation enables another dual-degree option: Master of Arts in History and Historic Preservation. The MA and PhD programs feature specialized tracks including Ancient Mediterranean, Medieval Studies, Early Modern Europe, Modern Europe, Global Interaction and Exchange, International History, Jewish Studies, Latin America, Middle East, Russia & Eurasia, Technology, Science, & Environment, United States History, and Women & Gender Studies. The MA program additionally offers concentrations in Africa and Military History. With over fifty faculty members and around 150 graduate students, the program demonstrates particular excellence in African-American, US, and Middle Eastern studies. Other strong areas include Western and Central Europe, Russia and Eurasia, Ancient Mediterranean, Latin American, and Women & Gender studies. Emerging fields gaining faculty and student interest include Atlantic history, the African diaspora, and Global Interaction and Exchange.
The Latin American History graduate program has risen to become among the nation's premier programs, guided by distinguished faculty who draw exceptional students from across the Americas. Our faculty's expertise spans the breadth of Latin American history, from the Iberian colonial period to modern developments, covering all regions from the Southern Cone to the Caribbean.
