The Economics Program provides graduate education culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy degree. While pursuing their Ph.D., students may also earn a Master of Arts degree. Specialization areas encompass: Advanced Macroeconomics, Advanced Microeconomics, Behavioral and Experimental Economics, Comparative Institutional Economics, Econometrics, Economic Development, Economic History, Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Industrial Organization, International Finance and Macroeconomics, International Trade, Labor Economics, Political Economy, and Public Economics. Current faculty research explores diverse subjects such as paternal influences on women's career decisions, Medicare prescription drug benefit expansions, climate effects on crop yields, outcomes of increased family planning access for low-income women, and factors behind the growth of US disability programs. Students and researchers frequently utilize the Maryland Population Research Center (MPRC), an interdisciplinary hub jointly operated by Economics, Sociology, and Demography departments, which focuses on demographic economics and population studies.

By the application deadline, applicants should have completed advanced undergraduate courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Applicants are also expected to have completed the equivalent of three semesters of calculus, a semester of linear algebra, and a semester of differential equations. The majority of admitted students have also completed course work in real analysis or other upper-level mathematics.
