Our doctoral program provides comprehensive training for students as both scholars and educators, combining rigorous coursework, hands-on research, and teaching practice. PhD candidates work closely with faculty mentors on current research initiatives while cultivating their own academic specialties. The curriculum offers a solid foundation in historical research developments while exposing students to cutting-edge advancements. Additionally, students gain teaching experience through assistantships and optional instructor roles. Our PhD alumni have achieved remarkable career success, with nearly all recent graduates securing professional positions upon completing their degrees. Our graduates now hold positions as tenure-track criminology professors, postdoctoral researchers, policy advisors, and research specialists at prestigious institutions nationwide.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
In addition to the general Graduate School rules, special admission requirements include a major in a social science discipline and nine hours of coursework in appropriate areas of criminal justice.
