The graduate program in the Computer Science Department ranks among the nation's best and within the top ten public institutions. Students can pursue both M.S. and Ph.D degrees, with nearly all full-time candidates receiving financial support through assistantships, fellowships, or grants. Our department excels in research across multiple disciplines, including artificial intelligence, computer networks and systems, database technologies, programming languages, software development methodologies, computational science, theoretical algorithms, visual computing, geometric processing, computer graphics, user interface design, and computational biology.
Computer Systems form the fundamental infrastructure supporting all software applications. Systems research focuses on creating essential frameworks and services that allow software to operate efficiently across hardware platforms. The systems research team explores operating systems, network architectures, parallel and distributed computing, and cybersecurity. Our approach combines theoretical investigation with practical experimentation, supported by dedicated laboratories within the Computer Science department and UMIACS.
