The Astronomy Department provides a doctoral program culminating in a Ph.D. degree. Candidates generally receive a Master of Science upon finishing their second year. The curriculum features comprehensive coursework spanning diverse astronomical disciplines. Faculty research specialties include cometary studies, interplanetary particulate matter, planetary orbital mechanics, exoplanets, stellar and planetary genesis, millimeter-wave astronomy, interstellar material, cosmic singularities, active galactic nuclei, time-variable celestial phenomena, galactic development, plasma astrophysics, high-energy cosmic processes, theoretical and computational astrophysics, and cosmological studies.
Students who enter the graduate program are normally expected to have strong backgrounds in astronomy, physics, and mathematics. A student with deficiencies in one of these areas may be admitted but will be expected to remedy such deficiencies as soon as possible.
