The Colleges of Information Science (INFO) and Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) are collaborating to introduce a new bachelor's degree program (BS) in Social Data Science (SDSC) at the University of Maryland. This major will develop competencies in the sophisticated techniques required to generate and handle data reflecting human behavior. Social data science involves every stage of the data lifecycle, from conceptualizing measurements to collecting, organizing, processing, examining, visualizing, storing, and repurposing information. Moreover, proper creation, interpretation, and application of social data demand knowledge of social science principles and specialized domain knowledge. By leveraging the combined strengths of BSOS and INFO faculty, this program will equip students to produce reliable, ethical, and impactful information outputs—including datasets, visual representations, and behavioral models—related to human actions and interactions.
