The Immersive Media Design program embodies the University of Maryland's commitment to bridging STEAM disciplines—merging scientific and technological studies with creative arts. This program ensures students gain expertise in both the technical and artistic aspects of immersive media. Immersive media captivates audiences through multi-sensory engagement, blending visual, auditory, and tactile elements to create interactive digital environments. While augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are common forms, immersive media also includes projection-based displays and sensory platforms. Participants in this program will master designing, developing, and producing diverse immersive experiences, from tactile interfaces to VR/AR applications. They'll work on solo and collaborative projects aligned with their skills and professional goals. Students select between two degree paths—Computing or Emerging Creative—to specialize in either technical development or artistic design.
The computing concentration caters to technically oriented students, leading to a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. This path includes core IMDM coursework, eight computer science classes, four ARTT courses, plus general education requirements. The initial year's curriculum mirrors the computer science major, allowing students to choose between IMDM and CMSC after completing 30 credits.
