Geology is the study of Earth's composition and processes. This field examines planetary formation and transformation, focusing primarily on our home planet. Researchers investigate Earth's interior and surface structures, the chemical and physical interactions occurring within and upon it, applying principles from mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology to comprehend terrestrial systems. The University of Maryland's Geology Department provides exceptional undergraduate research opportunities. Despite its compact size, the faculty conducts world-renowned research with support from various government agencies. Students frequently collaborate with professors on research projects, creating excellent employment prospects across diverse roles while gaining access to cutting-edge facilities. Notably, the Geology program stands out in our College by mandating all seniors to undertake a year-long research thesis, developed in consultation with their faculty advisor. These projects often result in publications in scientific journals and presentations at global conferences.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
