The chemical engineering bachelor's program features a demanding course of study that integrates chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics. Students learn to apply these scientific principles across diverse fields including energy, advanced materials, biotech, manufacturing, electronics, and nanotech. Our specialized electives integrate cutting-edge research for practical implementation. From their first year, participants gain direct engineering experience through Introduction to Engineering Design (ENES 100). This hands-on course challenges interdisciplinary student teams to conceive, construct, and launch a self-navigating hovercraft meeting strict performance criteria. The University of Maryland's Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department collaborates with the Institute for Systems Research to provide an accelerated five-year BS/MSSE dual degree. This initiative equips chemical engineering undergraduates with essential process systems engineering knowledge while expanding career prospects in the DC metropolitan region.
