The University of Maryland's College Park campus provides both a Bachelor of Science in Astronomy for undergraduates and introductory courses for non-majors. Astronomy students receive comprehensive training in astronomy, physics, and mathematics during their undergraduate studies. This curriculum equips graduates for roles in government or corporate research facilities, as well as for advanced studies in astronomy or similar disciplines. An astronomy degree also serves as excellent preparation for various non-astronomy professions. Graduates frequently pursue rewarding careers in research, teaching, or a blend of both. Others find opportunities in government agencies, private companies, observatories, museums, media organizations, and other fields. Earning a B.S. in Astronomy establishes strong mathematical and physics fundamentals while typically providing practical skills in computer programming and statistical analysis.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
