The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program offers undergraduate students a specialized, career-oriented education in music. Students can focus on composition, jazz, piano, strings, theory, voice, or winds and percussion, learning from distinguished faculty while participating in premier ensembles and cutting-edge music history and theory courses. About 60% of the curriculum focuses on music, combining rigorous professional training with an institutional emphasis on diversity, community involvement, and entrepreneurial skills. Graduates leave prepared for creative musical careers or admission to elite graduate programs. Though demanding, students can pursue the B.M. alongside another major—many combine it with a Bachelor of Music Education by extending their studies by one semester.
Our woodwind, brass, and percussion faculty feature nationally acclaimed soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral performers committed to personalized, high-caliber instruction. Active performers themselves, they include members of prestigious ensembles like the National Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic, and Washington National Opera Orchestra. Each year, students gain insights from visiting artists such as Robert Atherholt, Mark Nuccio, Adam Unsworth, Pius Cheng, and the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet through regular residencies.
